Moisturizing and Sealing(M/S) is the process in which you lock moisture in the strands. How often you moisturize and seal revolves around you and your regimen. I m/s no more than twice a week, any more makes my hair too limp. My Kenra shampoo and conditioner are highly moisturizing and remedy my protein/moisture balance...knock on wood. So what I do is section the hair into 4 as if prepping for a relaxer. Part a 1-1 1/2 inch section of hair at a time apply hair lotion focusing on ends then apply my oil of choice. With anything I apply to my hair I start with a little amount then add more if needed.
I understand at the beginning stage of your journey it may be useful to moisturize and seal daily until you no longer feel its necessary. Use a water-based lotion (water listed as the first ingredient) on the hair first then seal with an oil. This is the moisturizer I use at the moment. It can be found at your local BSS (Beauty Supply Store) for about $4.
The top (3) oils best used to seal is Extra-Virgin Coconut, Extra-Virgin Olive and Jojoba. The molecular structure in these oils are small enough to penetrate hair shaft. Recently I've started using Moroccanoil Treatment, which is Argan oil, as my sealant. Macadamia is another oil that is growing with popularity. At the beginning of my journey I used Coconut oil, which is what I still recommend for anyone starting out. You can get it at your local Health Food Store or Grocery for roughly $5-7 a jar.
Please try and stay away from petroleum and mineral oil based products, They lubricate not penetrate the hair and scalp. Growing up my mom would base my scalp regularly with grease. Who didn't have a jar of Blue Magic? How my hair was able to grow through those clogged pores is beyond me.
Throughout this adventure to healthy hair its trial and error. This is a method and a few product choices that I recommend that I KNOW works for me and my relaxed hair.
Good Luck and Healthy Hair Journey
